Kendall Lock, IBM Director of Workload Automation Development

Kendall Lock, IBM Director of Rome Lab

As we move through the challenging financial times of 2009, we hear a lot of the same talk we are used to hearing within IT:  "we need to be more efficient...," "we need to help drive more revenue..," "we need to standardize our multiple teams and acquisitions...."  Everything is either about making money, saving money, or proving compliance with some necessary standard.

Nothing lasts forever and these challenging economics will also change in time.  In 2010 your company will continue to focus on IT cost efficiency but will need to be ready to ride the opportunity of the economic recovery.  The key is to strongly leverage your automation strategy to survive the squeeze and to help your business find ways to thrive and grow!

How well do your executives know what your workload automation efforts are doing to drive your business successes?  How well do your executives know the emerging trends in workload automation technology?  Are you trying to gain your executive's support to attend the ASAP user education event in 2010?

If you would like your executives to know more, get ready to invite them to an invitation-only discussion about workload automation benefits, strategies, and customer successes that will be hosted by Kendall Lock, IBM Director of Workload Automation Development on Tuesday, March 9 at 11:00 AM ET.

ASAP 2010 - TWS USER EDUCATION - Business Justification
Posted by kwargo on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 12:35 PM EDT

This year more than ever it is critical to keep our business processes productive, effective and cost-efficient.

With this in mind I invite to join TWS users from around the world at ASAP 2010 on April 18-21, 2010 in Carefree, Arizona to learn about the new release of Tivoli Workload Scheduler and how to complete a smooth and cost-saving installation along with problem-solving tips and techniques from IBM's technical experts and seasoned TWS users.

ASAP 2010 will feature a keynote address by Kendall Lock, director of the Rome Lab and over eighty-five (85) educational training classes led by IBM's lead techs from Level 2 Support, the Rome lab development team, and IBM migration specialists and experienced TWS users. Topics related to both distributed and mainframe platforms include SOA, the latest release, renowned beginners workshops and technical labs.

Recognizing that this invitation must be approved by your management, the ASAP board of directors has drafted ASAP 2010 TWS User Education Training Proposal.doc - a boilerplate which outlines the benefits and costs of this worthwhile investment. I encourage you to modify and make this proposal your own and present it to your management.

ASAP's TWS User Education Training - an intense, three-day training program designed by users, for users - has been the premier education event for Tivoli Workload Scheduler and its predecessor for over twenty-two years. Simply put, ASAP 2010 is the best Tivoli Workload Scheduler User Education Training program hands down. I hope to see you there.

Sincerely yours,

Stanley Gildea, President

IMPORTANT Notice from Cy: High impact user error when migrating to TWSz V8R5
Posted by kwargo on Monday, September 28, 2009 03:56 PM EDT

We've had a mini tsunami of customers with "broken" CP datasets after migrating to TWSz V8R5 from any prior release.

The problem occurs if  the JCL from the old release is used to run an LTP EXTEND or MODALL, then use the resulting LTP as input to a CP EXTEND or REPLAN.

There is a change in the LRECL of the LTP batch workfiles LTPRIN and LTPROUT from 65 bytes to 66, and if JCL with the old, shorter LRECL is used, an LTP is created that is MISSING ALL EXTERNAL DEPENDENCIES.

The LTP job runs "clean", ending RC00, but there are no EXTERNAL DEPENDENCIES in the resulting LTP.  If that LTP is then used as input to a CP batch job, the CURRENT PLAN is created minus all EXTERNAL DEPENDENCIES and  things get really messy.

The problem is easily avoided by recreating the LTP and CP batch JCL from the 8.5 skeletons as is a required part of the release installation, then using the 8.5 skeletons to update the "canned" JCL in the JOBLIB.

We have created two APARS, PK93917 to correct the 8.5 documentation, and PK96855 to issue a new message when appropriate:

  • EQQ0956E OPEN FAILED FOR LTPRIN , CALLING MODULE IS EQQLCPRE
  • EQQ0956I REASON FOR FAILURE IS WRONG RECORD LENGTH

The PSP bucket for 8.5 has been updated, and two technotes have been created ---  1397318 and 1404048

Message from ASAP President Stan Gildea
Posted by kwargo on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 07:36 PM EDT

As we look to the future,
we begin by looking at the past.

ASAP President Stan Gildea
Looking back at this past year's conference in beautiful sunny Carefree Arizona, a few changes in the Board of Directors took place. With the economy and corporate down sizing that continues through out the world, we unexpectedly lost two members of the board. Bob Winter who served as Secretary, and Bruce Whitehead our past president were among those unfortunately laid off. Once again we would like to thank these two individuals for their many contributions over the years to ASAP and wish them all the best. The new ASAP board of Directors voted by the membership is as follows.

President               Stan Gildea, State Street Corporation
Vice President       Angel Delgado, CIGNA Corporation
Treasurer               Harry Hanlon, ING
Secretary               Jean Blackwell
Requirements        Robert Sommer, Citi
Member-at-Large   Bruce Whitehead

The position of newsletter editor will be temporary filled by Harry Hanlon.  A ballot process will be implemented to elect a person to fill this position prior to next year's conference. There has been much interest in this position. Anyone that would like to be considered as a candidate should contact Catherine Foley @ Meeting Works. Stay tuned to future newsletter issues for information on the process and the candidates that are interested in being your next Newsletter Editor.

As we look to the future with many new initiatives, we also embark on planning 2010 TWS User Education conference. Over the next few months we will be reviewing conference agendas from years past looking to revive session from prior conferences that still have relevance and provide suitable content with current TWS releases. Many of these sessions provided excellent support for features & function still used today. Your input in this process is invaluable. Take a minute and let the board know what you would like to see covered at ASAP 2010.  Better yet, submit a presentation proposal for the board to consider during its ASAP 2010 planning meeting on October 23rd.

With the summer months upon us the board will not recess as in past years, but will continue working on many goals and initiatives. This past year we re-branded the TWS user conference as TWS User Education, the Board of Directors is now looking to revamp the ASAP logo. With the rebranding we thought it would be good to open this up to the membership as a contest for everyone to submit ideas. Yes, a prize will be awarded to the person who submits the winning ASAP logo. We look forward to everyone's help with re-designing the ASAP logo.

Other objectives on which the board is working are:
  • ASAP Certification
  • IBM Education Dollars for ASAP tuition
  • Executive Briefings.
Just to name a few.

Well so long for now,

Stan

Stan Gildea is an Assistant Vice President supporting TWSz with 16 years of service at State Street Corp. Being a global corporation, Stan's interaction with groups across divisions throughout the world is a big part of his day to day work to keep TWS up and running. Working with application groups, understanding their needs and providing the best automated solutions TWS has to offer ensures that Production Control continues to provide State Street with the most efficient operating tools available. TWSz CERTIFICATION Update from Cy
Posted by kwargo on Monday, May 5, 2008 10:43 AM EDT

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to let you know that we will immediately initiate a review of the TWSz certification exam based on the results at the conference last week, and that the exam will be revised.

Since the results show rather conclusively that the exam as given was not an appropriate measure of TWSz skills, those results will be purged from the database...

We'll do an indepth statistical analysis of those results to adjust the scope of the exam and the scoring ("degree of difficulty") assigned to each question. Patently invalid questions will be eliminated or reworked, and the entire exam adjusted as necessary.

I want to thank everyone who took the TWSz exam for their time and effort in helping us create a TWSz certification program. I apologize for our obvious faux pas, and want to assure you all that we'll be working very hard to make the appropriate corrections.

.... Tell us Mrs. Lincon, aside from that one unfortunate incident, how did you enjoy your evening at the theater?

Aside from the exam, I think this year's conference was a great success. We heard a lot from the lab team on their plans, and they heard a lot from you as to what you need and want to make TWS the best fit for your companies. I look forward to working with you and them to implement our existing functions and those coming down the road.

Thanks for your time and commitment, I promise to at least match it.

Cy Atkinson, TWSz L2, RTP, NC
